Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan play freedom fighters in “Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.”

“Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey” Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Sikander Kher, Vishakha Singh, Samrat, Maninder, Feroz Wahid Khan, Shreyas Pandit; directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar; music by Sohail Sen.

This period thriller from award-winning director Ashutosh Gowarikar is based on the Chittagong Uprising of 1930 in British India. In this quiet town in a Bengal province, a revolution begins, which will inspire an entire nation. Abhishek Bachchan plays the daring Surjya Sen, a school teacher by profession, who leads the uprising. He is joined by a band of 63 others, comprised of 56 young boys, five experienced revolutionaries, and two determined women, including Kalpana Datta, played by Deepika Padukone. Kalpana was the highly educated daughter of an influential landowner with an interest in bomb making. They plan and execute a series of calculated attacks against the British in one night, April 18, 1930. The group represents a little-known chapter in history; a night that challenged an empire. The film tells the story of these forgotten heroes and takes us through their initial hesitation, the attacks, the underground movement, escapes and captures, and their legacy. Since most people know little about this uprising, director Gowarikar thought it an important story to tell. He bought the rights to “Do and Die,” a book by journalist Manini Chatterjee, which draws on, till now, unpublished police records and government files, to reconstruct the events of that fateful night.
