AKSHAY DESAI APPOINTED TO BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Akshay Desai, a physician and president/CEO of Universal Health Care in St. Petersburg, was recently appointed to the Florida Board of Governors by Gov. Jeb Bush.

�I'm honored to be appointed to the prestigious Board of Governors, which oversees the entire state university system,� Desai told Khaas Baat. �My problem-solving expertise will be of use for strategic planning, performance and accountability at all levels of higher education. It is indeed an honor and a privilege to serve my fellow Floridians.�

A WAVE OF COMPASSION

Dover Elementary School in eastern Hillsborough County, a school with a student population comprising almost entirely of children from migrant farm worker families, wanted to give back for all the help they have received during the holidays and the hurricanes. These are the same families that INDO-US Chamber of Commerce (INDOUS) has sponsored every year for a Thanksgiving Day dinner. Children who had frequently been at the receiving end of donations were instead giving back.

While growing up in Africa as a child, she was entranced by the world of books. They were a big influence on Ruth Jeyaveeran, "offering an escape, what it's like to live in a different place."

The 32-year-old novelist and painter now wants children, especially of ages 4-8, to enjoy that very same land of fantasy by laying hands on a debut book "The Road to Mumbai." (published by Houghton Mifflin)

Every parent wants the best possible education and life for their child, but often we turn to others to define what we mean by �best.� We all have experienced school so we have some perspective on this topic, but do we give our own opinions their due? Do we ask ourselves whether schools reflect our vision of the day-to-day activities of children and have we clearly thought about what it is we want for them? What is education and what should it do for our children? How can we best provide our children with the opportunity to experience our vision?
