By NITISH S. RELE - editor@khaasbaat.com

The tri-color flag will once again be unfurled in Tampa during India’s 55th Republic Day celebrations on Saturday, January 22 at India Cultural Center.

Organizing the free annual event once again is the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of Tampa Bay. Festivities will begin with a flag hoisting at 5:30 p.m. followed by a cultural program by Surabhee/Dhwani of California and then dinner by Shalimar Restaurant in downtown Tampa.

“Republic Day is India’s great national festival and we proud to hold celebrations here in Tampa,” said G.M. Ramappa, president of FIA. “We are hoping to have about 1,500 people attend the function.”

The event chairperson is Kalyani Derasari (813-977-6695) and the cultural program coordinator is Indira Sastry (813-854-1444).

Among the guests who will be attending the evening celebrations are Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker.

What is Republic Day?
India became a Republic and the Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950. The Constituent Assembly was convened and appointed a committee with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as chairman to draft the Constitution. India declared herself to be a Sovereign Democratic Republic.

The longest constitution in the world gives the right to vote to all citizens of 18 years of age unless they are disqualified. Fundamental rights are guaranteed to the citizens. The Supreme Court, consisting of the Chief Justice of India and other judges, is the guardian of the Constitution.

The Preamble to the Constitution reads:

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.
