TIPS TO DRESS UP FANCY FOR FESTIVE OCCASIONS!

Kiran Bahl

By KIRAN BAHL

Happy Independence Day and Happy Rakhi! With so many joyous occasions (and ultimately so many joyous parties), we have to dress up and dress up fancy! Let’s remember these tips to look our best for all types of gatherings, parties and events!

SASSY SLEEVES

A popular twist to outfits this season is putting more focus on the sleeves of your outfit. Yes, summer means less sleeves for most. But with Arab and Pakistani styles becoming popular more and more in India, sleeves in lawn, cotton and chiffon are taking over large. Three-quarter to long pleated sleeves look delicate and the embellishments are just as lovely. Embroidery, sequins, lace, tassles, even pom-poms ornated on the sleeve will modernize the traditional long sleeve, in multicolor summer hues of course.

TOP TRIMS

Salwar kameez and churidaar tops, or kameezes, are short, long and in-between. Like Western fashion, almost anything goes lately, with a specific style spurt now and then to get inspired by. The common factor amongst the tops though is the bottom trim. Like sleeves, trims decorated with beads, crochet panels, and even stones can transform your outfit’s color spectrum as well as entire overall look. Velvet and gold cutwork appliques are still in high demand as well as large foil panels and bright neon shade pieces.

DAPPER DUPATTAS

The dupatta, or scarf, is no longer an accessory or optional, it’s now a must-have! Ladies, stop wearing those suits without dupattas and definitely find yourself one when mixing up your kurtis with palazzos or salwar look. Dupattas are ART this season. The usual solid cotton or chiffon scarves are being upgraded with velvet trim or tassles, even artsy ones. Want the works? Go full on in your dupatta look with contrast colors, heavy printed designs and colorful stitching.

Gentlemen, we’re well into summer and runway collections for you are still amazing. Ensembles in bolder colors such as purple, turquoise and silver gray are still dominating with a couple of traditional twists that are looking surprisingly modern!

SIMILAR STOLES

Now we know to dress up your sherwani or kurta pajama, a neutral gold, silver or even red stole or dupatta looks good. To look great, however, match your dupatta to your sherwani top or kurta. For example, a black and silver sherwani should be paired with a black and white dupatta. A purple and gold kurta should be paired with a purple dupatta. A monochromatic look will look more updated and suave, guaranteed.

MAGNIFICENT MOJHRIS

The men’s mojhris are back! The traditional shoes have been almost disregarded in the desi man’s wardrobe, but south Asian designers everywhere are reviving the look, and I love it! From traditional cream and gold colors to current silver, black and even purple shades, the mojhri is back and better than ever. Match it to your sherwani or your dupatta for a more formal, customary feel.

Once again, we wish you all a happy Independence Day as well as a blissful, cheerful Raksha Bandhan. Love, peace and kindness are the main ingredients to any recipe of a function you plan as well as the mainstays of any relationship you form. And, as always, remember to ‘gro with style’!
