When I was in elementary school, I once asked my father to write a leave letter for my teacher. He was a lawyer by profession and completed it in less than a minute. When I looked at the paper, I was puzzled. Nothing on it resembled the neat alphabets my teacher wrote on the blackboard. I told my father, with complete confidence, that my teacher would not be able to understand this “scribbling.” He smiled and replied, “She will.”
He was right. My teacher read the letter effortlessly and accepted it exactly as my father had written. Only much later did I understand that what confused me then was cursive writing, a fluent, living form of handwriting that carries meaning beyond individual letters.
Today, that quiet art is slowly disappearing.
With computers, typing and voice-to-text technologies becoming dominant, schools have largely stopped emphasizing handwriting as a disciplined practice. Along with it, we are losing something essential: the development of fine motor skills, the coordination between fingers, eyes and brain, and the deeply personal imprint that handwriting leaves behind. For many of us who grew up carefully filling ruled notebooks, handwriting was once a daily ritual, an intimate conversation between thought and paper.
