A highly encouraging trend over the past two decades is the undeniable seepage of Indian classical music into the cultural ethos of the diffused desi community in Tampa Bay and Central Florida. Purveyors of good taste rejoice in the fact that associations and music schools such as Swaradhana and Shruti A.I.M. (Association of International Music) assume the responsibility of preserving and promoting musical classicism with great aplomb.

Swaradhana headed by Avinash Deshpande is hosting an electrifying concert called ‘The Masters of Rhythm’ at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, at the Hillsborough Community College (Dale Mabry campus) in Tampa. Headliners are a triumvirate of accomplished Indian classical instrumentalists that have carved a niche in the universe of taal (rhythm). Pandit Milind Tulankar plays the rare instrument Jal-Tarang (Water Xylophone). The grouping with ace tabla player Pandit Ramdas Palsule and multifaceted percussionist Ustad Taufiq Qureshi on the Djembe (West African drum) on stage sounds exciting. Visit www.swaradhana.org for tickets or email info@swaradhana.org

Shruti A.I.M. was established by the resident tabla maestro of Tampa Bay Shankhachur Lahiri and his wife drummer Heather DeRigo. With the purpose of popularizing Indian classical music in Florida not merely among the Indian community but also give locals a taste of this fascinating genre of melody and rhythm, the organization has attracted a new younger generation of performers. Shankh and Heather collaborate with Western musicians to perform World Fusion Music at various popular venues through their band 'Wahh’ while simultaneously also showcasing purely Indian classical musicians on a much different Tampa Bay stage.

Arati is a masterful and charismatic stage performer who has command over both technical and melodic aspects of Hindustani classical music.
